Our Well Winterization Process

Winter weather can be brutal on your water system, but our multi-point inspection and protection plan helps your well remain functional and frost-free all season long.

Here is what you can expect from our well winterization services in Traverse City:

  • System diagnostics - We test the pressure switch, control box, and pump cycle to promote peak performance before the cold hits.
  • Thermal protection - High-grade insulation and thermostatically controlled heat tape are applied to all vulnerable above-ground piping.
  • Structural weatherproofing - We seal air leaks in well houses and inspect the well cap to prevent freezing drafts and moisture intrusion.
  • Drainage and blowouts - For seasonal lines or outdoor hydrants, we drain and bleed the pipes to prevent expansion cracks.
  • Component calibration - We verify your pressure tank’s air charge to prevent system failure during high-demand winter months.

Backed by over a century of experience providing top-quality well water services, you can count on Berg Well Drilling to freeze-proof your water supply effectively. We adhere to the highest standards of workmanship to help you avoid unnecessary emergency well repairs

Does Your Well Need to Be Winterized Every Year?

While some components of winterization, like high-grade insulation or permanent heat trace cables, are long-term upgrades, well winterization is ideally an annual service. Over the course of a year, insulation can be damaged by pests or weathering, heat tapes can fail, and pressure switches can become clogged with debris.

An annual visit helps ensure that your winterization equipment is still intact and that your system’s mechanical health is prepared for the added stress of freezing temperatures. For seasonal properties, winterization is even more critical as the system must be professionally drained and blown out each year to prevent the stagnant water from expanding and shattering your pipes while you’re away.

Can Frozen Pipes Damage a Well Pump?

Yes. While most submersible pumps stay safe deep underground, frozen pipes can still cause catastrophic failure for your entire system, leading to well pump replacement. When water in your pipes freezes, it expands with enough force to burst metal and plastic alike.

Beyond the mess of a burst pipe, frozen lines can damage your pump in a couple of ways:

  • Deadheading/burnout - If the line between your well and your home freezes solid, your pump will continue to run against a dead head (total blockage). Because it can’t move water, the motor can quickly overheat or burn out trying to push against the ice.
  • Expansion damage - If you have an above-ground jet pump, water freezing inside the pump housing itself can crack the cast iron or plastic casing, effectively destroying the unit.

Even if the pump survives the initial freeze, the extreme pressure can damage the pressure switch (the brain of your system), leading to erratic behavior and well pump repairs. This is why we include a full check of these mechanical components in our winterization process. We don’t just protect the pipes; we also protect the equipment that powers them.
